As I mentioned in the evolution of the Theology images, quite often my drawings and paintings will change direction from the original idea that inspired them. The drawing on the left was done in 1999 and is called "Icarus with A Bird". It began as a study for the Madonna and Fish painting on the right (also done in 1999), but after some editing with a Black and Decker electric power sander, the fish disappeared.

When I received my graduate degree in 1992, times were lean, and I stayed home to take care of my daughter and later my son. My wife worked 40 -50 hours a week, while completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I took every adjunct teaching position I could get and did freelance graphic design and illustration on the side. My wife worked many nights and was able to be with the kids a lot during the day, but I was "mom" most of the time. This had not been part of my master plan. I was responsible for the care and safety of two living breathing human beings. I did not know anyone that could empathize with what I was experiencing. Guys talk about sports, not wiping butt.
So I dealt with it through my painting. I did several of these androgynous drawings, which dealt with the idea of father and son (through the Icarus and Daedalus story). As the drawing evolved, I stumbled across this Picasso painting that spoke to me. I stole the hand and bird. As much as Pablo stole, I do not think he will mind.
My drawings Icarus With A Bird and The Dreams Of Icarus were also part of this series.
