Well it has been an embarrassingly long time since I updated this site. As many of you know I took on a new position at East Carolina University as the head of the Painting and Drawing Area. I was not sure what to expect from this added responsibility, but the combination of a new job and several new assignments within the School of Art and Design added up to a sea of post it notes and to do lists that I could not dig out from under. I am scatter brained to begin with, but this job demands organization. I came up with the following analogy for the way that I feel about my new responsibilities; imagine an idyllic park-like setting with beautiful trees and perfectly manicured landscaping. Imagine that there are hundreds if not thousands of squirrels frolicking about in this Eden. Each squirrel represents a job or project that I have to do. I ride into this beautiful setting on horseback like Clint Eastwood, "Frolicking ain't much of a livin' boy". My job is to herd those squirrels into an igloo. Why? Because the administration feels that nuts maintain their freshness and wonderful taste much longer in an igloo as opposed to on the ground or in a squirrel's stomach. So I spend my day herding one or two squirrels into that igloo. At the end of the day I ride off into the sunset and the one or two squirrels run back out of the igloo. Why? Because the administration feels that doors create a feeling of negativity. So, as Clint Eastwood once eloquently said, "My old drama coach used to say, 'Don't just do something, stand there.' Gary Cooper wasn't afraid to do nothing".
To make this bizarre ramble even more interesting, I will tell you the most recent news. I am going to oversee the fabrication and design of igloos. That is right, for some insane reason, I have been asked to serve as the Assistant Director of the School of Art and Design as well as the Director of Graduate Studies, and I will continue as the Area Coordinator of Painting and Drawing. Apparently my ability to occasionally get 3 squirrels into an igloo (I didn't want to brag) and my reasoned lobbying for a door to the igloo has won respect with my superiors.
After lengthy negotiations about the details of my future job that included the following phrases being repeated repeatedly; "Are you kidding?", "Are you sure you have the right office?", "Did everyone else turn you down?", I accepted the position when I was assured how easy and enjoyable the job would be. I have painting time built into my work schedule, I will continue to teach one class a semester and have the summers off to paint.
NEW STUFF
I have 10 paintings reproduced on the the cover of Best American Fantasy which was edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer. It has already received a starred review from Publisher's Weekly and has not even been released.

I am working on a wrap around book cover for Jeff VanderMeer's next book The Situation, an amazing story that I hope I can do justice. It is a complex painting that will be in the same vein as Secret Life.

I am curating an exhibition called I've Got Issues at 5iveand40rty Gallery in Winston- Salem, NC. It is tentatively scheduled for November 2008.
My paintings are featured throughout Jeff VanderMeer's internet movie Shriek.

I AM NO LONGER MASTER OF
MY DOMAIN
Michael Meadors is the new Eyrie Studios webmaster. He is both humble and patient and an extremely gifted artist. I told him what I wanted done to my site (enough work to keep me busy for a month), he was finished in a couple days. And he didn't quit when I said "That shade of grey in the drop shadow behind the type doesn't have enough green. I know you spent an hour matching it already but..."
Here is a peak at some of his work.
A LOOK BACK
This episode will feature a look back. I have posted a bunch of older work, as well as rearranging work into (s)old and available. Last year was almost too successful, if that is possible. I sold over half of the work in each of the solo shows that I had. To make things more difficult, my newest work is all collaborative and on one of the small paintings, I have invested literally hundreds of hours of work. I will feature those at the next update.
REVIEWS (of the 5IVE
& 40RTY
exhibition.)
I want to thank Tom Patterson for a wonderful review in Sunday, December 10, 2006 edition of Winston-Salem Journal.
..."Eagle's work aptly reflects the uncertainty and frequent perils of corporeal existence. It's a timeless theme, but one that seems particularly relevant during troubled times. A skilled painter, Eagle gives this theme a rich metaphorical treatment in the 22 works that make up his solo exhibition "A Muse with a Habit," at 5IVE & 40RTY through Jan. 12."...
DOT finalizes Greenville
Boulevard pedestrian study Tuesday,
July 31, 2007
The N.C. Department of Transportation recently completed a 20-month review of alternatives presented by a group of Leslie Hill's friends. Funding for most of the changes, which will cost approximately $98,000, will be taken on by the group of teenagers that requested the safety review after Hill was killed....

On April 11, 2005 one of my daughter's best friends was hit by a car and killed instantly. I was amazed at how deeply and profoundly this event troubled me. My daughter has handled this very courageously and proactively. Erika and her friends have lobbied the local government and the DOT to do something to make the road where Leslie was killed safer. She has built a website, appeared on television and in our local newspaper several times. Last summer I tagged along for a meeting with our local DOT. I had expected a token gesture and quick dismissal. Instead, There were 8 engineers present. They talked with Erika and her friend Taylor for over an hour and concluded that a study of the situation was in order. The result was not what the girls wanted, but they have gotten more done than I ever dreamed. I have been tremendously impressed and proud.
