In
response to the many questions I have had about this image, I will
provide a brief statement. But first may I say that I continue to be
amazed by the multifarious interpretations any work of art may
inspire once the artist is no longer around to discuss it's meaning.
I believe that it was Kandinsky that said works of art are the
children of their time. Any parent can tell you that no matter how
much or how little effort is put into raising a child, that child
will have a mind, will and opinions all her own. Sometimes when the
child goes off on her own, she becomes something completely
unexpected or even shocking to the parents.
Any work of art experiences this same evolution. Because I try to look at all aspects of life, and understand all sides of an issue or an idea, my imagery frequently inspires meanings and discussions that may be different from what I see in that image. Such is the case with the drawing on my homepage. I have had an amazing number of people contact me asking me if I believe that church and state are inseparable, and others that find the image as anchor comforting.
The title for the drawing is God Bless America.

The idea for this image came to me while I was working on a collage called The Triumph of Freedom.
In that image there is huge cart filled with just about anything that you could imagine. I wanted the cart to have an eagle for a hood ornament and the one I picked just happened to fit perfectly over the legs of Christ. That little image got me thinking about Nationalism. When I began seeing the bumper stickers in response to the war, and later when I heard the candidates repeating the phrase over and over, the idea for the drawing crystallized in my mind.
Religion is an anchor for the human spirit or psyche. It is a solid place in a sea of chaos. The basic shape of the God Bless America image is an anchor.
I believe that our most powerful national symbol is the bald eagle. It is also my last name, and this is just my little idea.
In America, when we speak of God, most people are referring to a Christian conception of God. I believe that Christ on the cross is the most powerful Christian symbol.
When nationalistic and religious ideologies are combined, they form an amalgam that, pardon the pun, just won't fly. If God is the Alpha and the Omega, creator of heaven and earth, why would God bless our strangely shaped geographic region more than any other strangely shaped geographic region. The Christian conception of spiritual love, Agape, is in direct opposition to Christian nationalism.
Forget what the politicians say and listen to Tiny Tim; "God bless us every one".
